Dallas, TX | What is the procedure for a dental implant? | Drs Hamlett and LaMastra
Dental implants are by far the best choice you have when replacing a missing tooth. Because of this, many patients are curious about what the dental implant process is like.
The first step starts with a consultation with your dentist to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Your dentist will scan your jaw with a x-ray to see if you have enough jaw bone at the site of the missing tooth to support the implant. If you are a good candidate, your dentist will create a surgical guide to place the implant using the data obtained from the x-ray. You are in control of your sedation method for the next step, which will be placing the post into your jaw bone. Once complete, the post will need time to osseointegrate with the surrounding bone which can take up to three months. During that waiting period you can discuss with your surgeon if you should have a temporary crown during the healing process. After the healing period, a new crown is placed on the post and you have a tooth that is indistinguishable from the original!
